Textiles are closely 'interwoven' with human civilization. Knitting and weaving are the oldest and most widespread production methods. However, having been together for so long, we sometimes seem to overlook their potential.
Fabrication with Fabric(2022) is research to track the evolution of knitting and weaving techniques to create 3D shapes, including various types of knitted and woven structures. This article provides a comprehensive historical overview of 3D knitting and 3D weaving, listing key innovators, technological developments, benefits, and providing examples of structures built in this way. The information collected will present a classification of these related manufacturing technologies and their potential applications. This article introduces the reader to these techniques while at the same time providing additional insight into their development for those already familiar with these methods.
